The moment I saw the previews for Girls Trip I couldn’t wait to get with my best girl friends to see it! Unfortunately, both of them are currently living in other states, but that did not stop me.
(If you do not know which movie I am talking about, I need you to move from up under that rock and click here)
This past weekend my younger sisters and I had a girls day, filled with dinner, long islands, and edible cookie dough. We were full of laughter, shared secrets and advice. Our spirits were high, and our girl power was shining, because we knew later that night we were going to witness black girl magic!
“Refreshing” is the best way I can describe this movie for a few reasons.
One, it was great to see four black women together on screen having crazy fun, loving and supporting one another, rather than fighting and cursing each other out. I don’t know about ya’ll, but I get tired of turning on the TV and watching girls swinging at each other over petty gossip. While, yes the movie had a few scenes where the ladies did not see eye to eye, but what friend group doesn’t?
Secondly, I have honestly not laughed that hard in a very long time. From start to finish I was dying with laughter. There was never a dull moment with those women and can we say BLACK EXCELLENCE? I felt like I was at the Essence Festival myself (which is on my bucket list). They really took you on the experience, from concerts to clubs to celebrity appearances. I was ready to start booking flights and hotels for next year’s Essence Festival halfway through the movie.
Lastly, Girls Trip reminded me that a real friend is always going to be there. It is soo important to cherish the lifelong friendships that you have developed. As an introvert, I find myself wrapped up in my own life. I caught up with working, classes, Netflix, etc. that I sometimes forget to appreciate the friendships that I have. So, to my friend that I have not talked to in a while, to my friend that I may not always see eye to eye with, to my friend a plane ticket away, and to my friend who I hate to go a day without, thank you for supporting me, I love you and I will always be there to pick you up no matter the circumstances.
And on that note ladies (& gents), I encourage you all to call up your friends and tell them how much you love and appreciate them, and if you’re feeling adventurous, brunch? Who knows, maybe you are due for some crazy fun like the ladies in Girls Trip!
